At PermaTree we have a few so called “Food Forest’s” zones. So far a total of 8 zones, within the most accessible part of the farm (permaculture zones: 1,2,3,4), dedicated to grow high a diversity of fruits. As you can see these food forest zones are spread between our other crops. In the initial phase we have been able to identify which plants thrive more than others in the overall tropical / humid climate. But interestingly over time, the exact location of the plant in terms of “contour lines“ of the zone topography can wary extremely in development of each plant.
Food Forest: Garden Eden
“Forest gardening” is a prehistoric method of securing food in tropical areas. These gardens exemplify polyculture, and conserve much crop genetic diversity and heirloom plants that are not found in monocultures. Forest gardens have been loosely compared to the religious concept of the Garden of Eden.
Goal: Food self-sufficiency
Our main goal with the food forest is to have more than enough food for ourselves and everybody at the farm animals included. With a focus on high quality edible fats, such as avocado, coconuts, all amazonic nuts and naturally all the tropical fruits you can imagine.
